Give each release a reason to exist

By Burstimo 1 min read

A steady flow of singles can be useful. It can also become a routine that leaves no time to understand whether the music is reaching anyone.

Before choosing the next release date, ask what the next song is meant to do. Introduce the artist? Reach a different audience? Build towards a larger project? That answer should shape the campaign.

Give the campaign enough room

Putting a song out is one part of the work. There is also the story around it, the content that helps people find it and the follow-through when something connects.

If the next single arrives before those pieces have had time to develop, a busy schedule can work against the music. A song that is starting to find its audience may deserve more attention before you move on.

Think beyond the calendar

A group of songs can give listeners a fuller sense of an artist. A single can create a clear introduction. Neither format is automatically the right choice.

Look at the material you have, the audience you are building and the resources available. Plan a sequence that gives each release a purpose and leaves enough time to support it.

The useful measure is whether one release creates a stronger starting point for the next. More songs in the catalogue are only part of that picture.
