A better brief for a streaming campaign

By Burstimo 1 min read

“More streams” is an incomplete brief. The more useful question is what those streams should lead to: discovery, returning listeners, interest in the catalogue or a stronger audience for the next release.

Define the aim first. Then choose the work that supports it.

Separate reach from an audience

A burst of listening can be encouraging, but it needs context. Review where it came from and what happened afterwards. A headline number cannot explain the quality of a campaign on its own.

Give new listeners a recognisable artist profile and a reason to continue exploring. The campaign should connect the song to the wider body of work.

Be precise about playlisting

Spotify says artists cannot pay for placement on its editorial playlists. Its official route is Spotify for Artists. Read Spotify’s explanation of editorial pitching before assessing promises from a third party.

A marketing plan should be clear about what is being bought, what work will be delivered and which outcomes remain uncertain.

Review before expanding

Agree how you will assess the campaign and when you will review it. Look at the listening response alongside the creative work, audience feedback and money spent.

Use that review to decide whether to continue, adjust or stop a particular approach. A good brief makes those decisions easier.
