Finding your audience on Spotify

By Burstimo 1 min read

A streaming campaign needs to do more than create a short-lived increase in plays. It should help the music reach relevant listeners and give them a reason to explore the artist.

Playlists can be part of that work. They are not a substitute for an audience relationship.

Use the official pitching route

Spotify for Artists lets you pitch an upcoming, unreleased song to Spotify’s editors. Spotify asks for delivery at least seven days before release, and makes clear that a pitch does not guarantee placement. Check the current pitching guidance when planning the release.

Give the editors clear, accurate context about the song. Avoid inventing a story or treating a pitch as a promise of coverage.

Bring interested listeners to the music

Build the campaign around material that makes people want to hear the track: a performance, a distinctive excerpt or the story behind it. Make the route from that introduction to the full song straightforward.

Use the response to understand which audience and creative approach deserve more attention.

Judge the quality of the result

Look at listening in context: where it came from, whether people returned and whether interest extended to the artist’s other music.

A playlist placement may create an opportunity. The wider campaign should give that opportunity somewhere to lead.
